Riverwalk on Roosevelt Island
Roosevelt Island, New York, NY
As the co-developers of Riverwalk on Roosevelt Island, in partnership with Related Companies, Hudson has successfully tackled the challenges of creating a “new town” at a location that has defied previous government-sponsored development efforts. Riverwalk is a planned community that, at build out, will include nine buildings and 2,000 new units of housing, a new central retail commons at the subway station and new recreational facilities for all of the island’s residents. The development team has completed the first six residential buildings, along with the new Main Street, new ball fields and retail and childcare facilities.
In taking on Riverwalk, Hudson has demonstrated an ability to successfully execute a residential development of significant scale and complexity. Hudson was designated co-developer by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), the state agency that manages Roosevelt Island, in response to a public RFQ. The planned nine buildings and related infrastructure are being carried out as a multi-phase development executed over a number of years. Hudson has dealt with a number of complex physical and governmental issues including a street mapping action, conflicting governmental authority over infrastructure on the island, rock excavation, constructing over a subway tunnel, variable sub-surface conditions, and the extension of utilities to previously un-served areas. Hudson has also successfully engaged the island’s diverse and very active residents through the extensive planning, approval and construction process.
